Loch na Bruthaich

Loch na Bruthaich is right next to the road on the way from Clashnessie to Strathcroy. It is very little fished - and the stock shows evidence of this. 3-4oz fish leap onto a fly with an alarmingly suicidal tendency.

I fished this loch again (twice) in June and (once) in August 2014. Still lots of little fish in this loch, but now there are some more sizeable ones in the 3 to a pound range. Almost any fly seems to work.

Sunny and warm, spent a couple of hours working round Loch na Bruthaid (near Clashnessie). Back in 2009 this loch was populated with large numbers of tiddlers that took any fly that came near them. Then after two hard winters the numbers seemed to decline dramatically. This year I hooked a few tiddlers and one small trout (all safely returned). Probably better than last year, but still not back to its pre-2010 years.

I first visited Assynt in 1976 and camped in the field in front of Bordans in Clashnessie. For sentimental reasons I have fished this loch on every subsequent visit. The fish are very small but numerous, the road-side shore always produces a rise to a small black fly.

Poor day weather wise - cold and changeable from hail to snow to sun.

Walked south Bank and had success just in the surface and pulled through ripple and wave. To 8 oz.
