Loch Veyatie

Was wondering if someone could clarify whether trolling is allowed on Veyatie now? I was under the impression that it was ok to troll for ferox in Veyatie, Cam, Assynt and Beannach, but after looking up the rules on the new AAG website, there was no mention of Veyatie. If this is the case with an AAG permit, is it still ok from a Ledmore boat?

Fished Veyatie on Saturday 13th July '13. The weather had worsened even from the Friday - strong winds & 10-12 degrees (compared to Mediterranean weather further south)! Sid had 3 fish in the first 4 casts so that perked us up! Once again kate McKlaren & gold muddler doing the damage. I struggled to begin with & only picked up the odd fish in the 1st hour or so. After an hour I gave up on the bank fishing & headed out in the belly boat, started picking up fish straight away. However; a change to a pearly Invicta on the top dropper brought instant results picking up fish virtually every cast with yet another double hook up. After lunch I reluctantly relinquished the boat to Ravsy & started bank fished; after a quiet 1/2 hour started picking up fish in a 'quieter' bay where the wind was slightly off the water. Great period culminating in a lovely fish of around 13". Apart from the Invicat Other good flies were golden olive bumble & GRHE! Got the belly boat back at 18:00 & had an amazing last 2 hours culminating with a 3 fish on one cast one of which was an artic char (my 1st). Amazing loch & I did catch more than 30 fish!! Beautiful surroundings & a stunning lake.

11lb Brown TroutI read your reports on Loch Veyatie and heard that someone had caught an 11lb trout - as i was the lucky devil in question, i thought i should send a couple of pictures. I have fished Assynt for the last 6 years, but this was the first year my fishing partner and i had been to Veyatie. We had fished on the Tuesday during the day, each catching a couple of dozen trout in the 8-10 oz range on mini-muddlers, with one or two nearing 12oz. Wednesday 11th August had been stormy, so we returned to fish the last hour of daylight as Cathel Macleod's guide suggested big fish moved then. As it was still windy and rainy, we set up with 7wt rods and black goldhead lures about 2 inches long. I've seen big fish take small flies, but generally they prefer a big meal, so it pays to tailor the fly to the target fish. I started from a point on the southern shore, with the fish taking third or fourth cast. It fought more like a salmon than a trout, with the added drama of a half pounder taking the bumble on the dropper 15 minutes into the battle. After 35 minutes adrenaline-filled minutes, my friend managed to land both; there were shaking hands (nerves and congratulatory) all round! It was 31.5 inches long and very deep as you can probably see from the photos. We'll definitely be back next year!

These four trout were all taken from Veyatie within an hour. The three smaller, hand held, ones were caught within 12 minutes of each other and although all from the same spot, behind the island on the north shore by a burn mouth, show distinct differences in markings. The larger fish was caught from the bank further west near the mouth of the lagoon. There was a real gale blowing up the loch, hence the sheltered anchorage behind the island and the casting from the bank. If you are fishing any of the Assynt lochs which are advertised as having a "polypropylene" boat, get the biggest engine available! The boats are unsinkable but have the hydrodynamics of a brick and with a draught of two or three inches can be blown miles down the loch before you realise what is happening. With this in mind, a drogue is essential in all but the lightest winds.

The wind was certainly up - fished in the evening just as the forecast gales started to blow. Tried the north bank, where it was possible to cast. Lots and lots of small trout coming up in the waves to the fly - taking chunky Muddlers mostly, but also Black Pennel and Sedgehog. Had one of around 3/4lb and late on rose one much larger fish near the burn at the south estern end. It snatched at the fly and didn't stick but made a big impression even in those waves.

Someone caught a monster of 11lb the week before hereabouts..!

A GOOD DAY OUT BUT BEWARE OF LARGE ROCKS JUST UNDER THE SURFACE THAT PROTRUDE QUITE FAR OUT FROM THE BANK.SUGGEST YOU CUT THE OUTBOARD AND ROW IN WHEN SETTING A DRIFT NEAR THE SHORE.THE LOCH IS ALSO FAMOUS FOR HIGH WINDS WHICH CAN CHANGE DIRECTION VERY QUICKLY.
WEAR A LIFE JACKET AND WATCH THE WEATHER.
