Loch Donnaig

Loch Donnaig is a lovely quiet loch holding some decent sized fish (I've had several around the pound mark) and with a great view of the sea through a saddle. Also look out for red deer here - they are often about. As you drive from Clashnessie toward Drumbeg, there's a small parking space on the left just after the Strathcroy art studio.

Donnaig 11th September 2012

I parked at the advised space, and was surprised to find a path to a gate, then over the field to a style - all in excellent order - not the usual approach to Assynt Lochs! There was a very strong west wind, so I traversed along the steep south bank, to reach a promintory with the wind on my back, but found that much of the bay was weed covered. I fished along the edge of the weed, and landed an 8oz trout (safely returned). I hope to visit this loch again (next year) in better weather conditions.

The Donnaigs and Beyond August 16th

Had a brief hour in the evening fishing the two Donnaigs but was very dour in bright sun - a few rises, just one small trout in Donnaig. Then tried the lochan just beyond, to the east of Glac Fearna. Gave it a good couple of hours and went all the way around. I honestly think there's nothing in this loch.

It looks like it should be good, but this was my second visit to it (first I was just walking nearby) and there is no sign of any fish! Cathel told me subsequently he shares my view, which was reassurance of sorts!

30th May and 12th June

Fished Donnaigs twice in two week stay in Assynt. Caught one half pounder on second outing with deer hair sedge but slow going later as wind dropped to flat calm.

May 30th

Caught one of 3/4lb on an olive goldhead nymph in sunny weather, fished quite deep. Slow going, easterly wind not helping.
